As parents of 3 beautiful girls who are 14, 10 and 13 months my husband and I don’t get many chances to spend time without the kids, so when we get the chance to go out we run. I am just kidding it is more like a light jog but when my sister offered to take all the kids for the whole day and evening I started to look up things we could do right here in Cape May. I wanted to take this opportunity to not only spend a fun evening with the hubby but I wanted to go out of our comfort zone. Don’t get me wrong in the past we have tried to spice it up and we did something called the penny date. Which is a very simple concept where you let a flip of a penny decide where you will spend your evening. What I learned from the penny date is that I am a horrible flipper of coins and you may end up eating a restaurant that you may not enjoy. We had a fun evening that night because we were together but our dinner ended up being a little bit more money than we wanted to spend and even though we went to a place we have never eaten at before, I just wasn’t happy that we got stuck at a place that I never would have picked if I had a choice. But the penny decided so I went along with the plan so this time I was going to plan a evening that I knew we would both enjoy but was also something new and outside the box for us.
I think as locals of Cape May county we don’t take the time to really enjoy the amazing establishments we have available to us on a daily basis. I know our daily life is not a vacation even though we live in a very popular vacation resort, but why live in such a beautiful community that is full of culture, amazement and fun if we can’t enjoy it like the Shoobies do. So on Sunday after a very nice dinner we headed to the Cape May Stage which is located at 405 Lafayette St in Cape May where we had the opportunity to watch “Sex with Strangers”. Cape May stage website states “Sex With Strangers” by Laura Eason is the story of a twenty something star blogger and memoirist who tracks down his idol, the 40ish gifted but obscure novelist at a bed and breakfast in rural Michigan. She gives him class, he gives her sex. It is a compelling comic drama about letting go of the past and embracing the future. It’s been called “a juicy, summer beach play” that is “twisty and timely”. A hit off-Broadway in 2014.
As I am not in anyway a play critic I will tell you both my husband and I were entertained throughout the entire production. The set designs are great and the play only has two actors which actually gives you the opportunity to really get personal with them, plus keep in mind the play is called ‘Sex with Strangers so I would say we got personal with them in the very first act. The actor Jackson Thompson who plays Ethan is very funny and even though he comes off as a typical Millennial who wants fame and fortune, he turns out to be a very talented writer who used his personal rendezvous with many many many women to his advantage. Olivia who is played by Catherine Frels is a bit older than Ethan and has not really embraced the digital era that we have found ourselves in. Olivia reminds you of someone who is from Cape May. She is very traditional but at the same time she is a free spirit. Which is where Cape May itself is going, traditional values with a bit of modernism mixed in.
Cape May stage is currently celebrating their 27th year and New Jersey Monthly magazine voted them as the best live theater in South Jersey and I would say that Cape May Stage is the best kept secret in our small community and if you have the opportunity to see “Sex with Strangers” I would run, don’t jog because the show only runs through July 29th. But if you are unable to attend this production don’t fret because Cape May stage is already working on it’s next play which will begin on August 3rd.
Ticket prices are $38.00 for general admission but discounts are offered to students and active duty for only $18.00 and Seniors are also offered discounted prices for $33.00. Tickets can be purchased at the box office or online at http://capemaystage.org
Even though we didn’t take advantage of the Dinner and a show package you can actually enjoy a number of different restaurant establishments in addition to the show located right in Cape May.So it makes date night planning much easier. Go to the website for a complete list of all participating restaurants.
I would like to say thank you so much to the Cape May stage for having us as your guest for the evening and to the staff at Cape May stage thank you for an enjoyable experience and for making our date night one to remember.
Cape May stage is the perfect place to enjoy for a date night, girls night out or just a night out away from your every day lives. The best part of Cape May stage is we have the opportunity to see Broadway type plays that otherwise we would need to drive hours to see and the ticket cost for shows in NY are very expensive and for for this mom of 3 I appreciate the affordable tickets that they offer and like they say LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION.
